What is the current fuss about mind maps and concept maps? What purpose do they serve? Are they the same thing?
If I can draw a simple analogy using say a road map or a places of interest map, maps essentially does 2 things: indicate the connection from one place to another and it also give details of places. As I gathered, this basic pattern or topology is similar to how the brain stores and categorises information i.e., like a map. The process in which the brain categories information is usually linear centering around a keyword or previous experience. New information received are place accordingly base on the closeness or similarity to the keyword or previous experience.
The mind map centers around the keyword or experience and maps out the information surrounding them. Over time the information builds up but they are generally categorised by the keywords. The mind map is useful when you want to seek clarity on a keyword/ experience.

A concept map takes mind map to a higher level by clarifying the relationship or connection of the information to the keyword/ experience. New knowledge is produced when this relationship or concept is made overt through a concept map. The concept map is a useful tool for brainstorming and development of logic.
